In a tragic maritime disaster that occurred off the coast of Guyana, 41 people lost their lives and efforts to find about 60 others who are missing continue. The accident happened while a ship was traveling from the capital of Guyana, Georgetown, to the remote village of Port Kaituma on Sunday night.
Details of the Disaster and Promise of Investigation
The ill-fated ship, which was on a 24-hour journey, made an emergency call after about eight hours in the middle of the night. One of the survivors told the media that a loud noise was suddenly heard and water began to pour into the ship. The vessel sank quickly with about 180 people on board.
The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, promised in a televised address that a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident would be conducted. He also mentioned that the ship's captain, who was rescued alive, tested positive for cannabis after the investigations. This claim has been raised by the media and has not yet been confirmed or denied.
Currently, search and rescue operations are underway using boats, aircraft, and divers, and local authorities hope to locate the missing individuals.
