Summer vacation is a golden opportunity for young people to improve their digital security. The "Medienscouts Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" project has recently provided strategies for privacy protection and improving the status of user accounts on social media.
Key Tips for Protecting Personal Information
According to experts from this project, the first step in protecting personal information is to review and strengthen passwords. Using strong passwords for each user account is essential, and employing password management software can greatly assist in this matter.
Additionally, young people should pay attention to privacy settings on each platform. Key questions such as "Who can find my profile?" and "Who can see or share my posts?" should be answered carefully.
Reviewing app permissions is also another important strategy. Many apps request extensive permissions by default. Does a wake-up alarm app need access to your photos? Does a video app need permanent access to your microphone or location? Such permissions should be managed with caution.
Young people can also prevent potential insecurities by removing followers and contacts who are unknown. It is also recommended that friend requests from unknown individuals should never be accepted.
Finally, young people can review their profiles and delete or update old content that does not align with their current identity. This helps create a genuine and up-to-date online presence and can enhance the user experience on social media.
Young people in grades eight to ten can take advantage of educational opportunities in free weekend camps to become digital advocates and assist their peers in areas of information protection, digital media, and combating cyberbullying. Registration for upcoming educational courses in November in the city of Schwerin has begun.
